Congratulations to the 2010 Math Counts Team!
On Saturday 2/13, when most of Philadelphia was sleeping (or digging out), the GFS MathCounts team competed in the Philadelphia Chapter competition against 10 other schools, at Temple University. We finished 2nd to Masterman and Leland Reardon, an 8th grader, finished first overall in the city.
Our team beat CHA and Penn Charter, among other city schools.
Our team consisted of all 8th graders: Leland, Veena Advani (who finished in the top 10), Oliver Fox and Camille Choe. In addition, we brought 4 individual contestants who took the same tests: 8th grader Maddie Lee and 7th graders Taara Advani, Liana Spiro and Sophie Trotto. All of our participants finished in the top half of all the contestants.
Leland and Veena, by virtue of a top-10 finish in the written part of the competition, competed in the CountDown Round, where 2 contestants face each other in a 1 v. 1 duel to see who can answer questions first. Questions are projected and the two players have 45 seconds to solve the same problem. Leland not only won the written competition, but he won the countdown round as well. He will be going to the State competition at the end of March, representing GFS.
Thanks to Dave Mraz for providing support. It was a successful, fun day.
