Welcome to our Middle School web pages. Our Middle School is comprised of 220 curious, caring, and thoughtful sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students. Our liberal arts program transitions students from the self-contained, sixth grade classrooms to a fully departmentalized eighth grade program that includes grades at the end of each marking period.
Teachers, who model a passion for learning, lead our classrooms by offering a rich blend of traditional learning with experiential and project style learning. Our students learn to balance their efforts among math, science, history, English, Modern or Classical language, art, music, and physical education. We are a division that is lively, engaging, and a place that students can call their own.
Outside the classroom, students and faculty work also together to
expand our horizons. Our student government is fashioned on the
governing style of the Religious Society of Friends. In this model,
students learn how to clerk a meeting for business with their peers.
Additionally, students are actively involved with student publications,
student-run events like talent shows and dances, an Environmental
Action Club, Web Club, and a Hip-Hop Dance Club - to name a few.
Our
program also includes a scheduled Project Time, which includes courses
like Community Action/Service, Woodshop, and Drama. These facets of our Middle School allow students to hone existing talents and discover new
ones. In addition, three seasons of sports and a full instrumental and
choral music program help us reach our mission of educating the whole
child.
Germantown Friends School is founded upon the principles of the
Religious Society of Friends. At GFS, we strive to be as diverse a
community as possible, and enjoy the learning opportunities afforded to
us by residing in Germantown. This unique combination of influences
creates a foundation for our school, which generates a deeply
humanitarian sense of the world and a striving for peace, justice, and
equity. Our division's learning environment affirms the school’s
mission statement, demands attention and reflection, and promotes
growth.
Our parents are also integral to our learning community. They, too, are
lively, concerned people who support their children and the school.
Many parents volunteer for the school throughout the year or serve on
committees, which give important feedback to the school. Participation
in the GFS Middle School implies that you are joining an engaging and
complex community, which can offer a meaningful experience and
education for you and your child. Please take a moment or two to look
at our divisional web-pages and you will get a glimpse of our exciting and
well-balanced program.
